Lia's Tap Recital - Boogie Fever

Might as well end our May with a bang!  Lia finishes up tap class with her big Memorial Day recital at the Pavilion tonight.  Yes, I am finally blogging in real time!  We spent most of our morning at her dress rehearsal and she is very excited for her big show in a few hours.

Here is her professional pictures we received today.  I think they came out lovely.  She doesn't usually smile that pretty for me!

I took this picture before the dress rehearsal.  She is super excited.  And... they let the proud parents video the dress rehearsal from the pit area so this Mama took full advantage!  Lia looks pretty confident and I love that she is even smiling during the fun parts!

The Cozy Chair

This picture just makes me happy on so many levels!  I read to my kids constantly.  It is part of our family culture.  When we got this chair, it was designated as the cozy reading spot...  I like to sit here and read by myself.  I see the kids snuggle up here and read as well.  But when the smallest child invites an older sibling to read to him... and said older sibling does so joyfully... oh, how the angels sing!

David and Isaac's "donuts"

I think David is the best big brother in the entire world for this little ritual he plays through with Isaac.  I finally caught a version of it on video.  He patiently plays this baking game with Isaac, where they make donuts, cookies, and cinnamon rolls out of PlayDough.  They always do it exactly the same way.  I'm fairly certain that David has made about 1000 different kinds of baked goods by now!

Knights of Columbus and Squire Circle

Squire Service Day

Chris has been in Knights of Columbus for ten years now and it is his fourth year to run the squire circle.  I've love that David is now a part of this wonderful boy's group.  They are pictured here serving at a banquet.  Since it is May, the turnout was low... this is actually two squire circles from two churches.  David's buddy Courage was there, so that was a treat for him!

Emily, choir solo

Emily had a solo part for this year's spring choir performance.  They performed this song as part of a farewell party for their beloved religious teacher, Mr. Englemeyer here.  It is a song dedicated to the love and spirit of Mother Teresa.  She sings around the 26 sec. mark.  :-)

And here is the full version from her Spring Fine Arts Show.

Big Bad Musical

Emily finished off her seventh grade year in a flurry of activity... really, it made my head spin!  The two weeks before final exams were filled with play practices for the school's middle school production of Big Bad Musical!  Emily didn't participate in theater classes this year but since she was in choir and dance, she was able to participate in the singing and dancing for this production.  It made quite an impression!  She was singing all the songs nonstop and announced that theater is her new passion!  So, in other words, it was a blast for her!

Wolfette costume from Amazon (so convenient)

I tried to get some pictures during the play using my iphone but they were terrible!  Luckily for me, a few more talented photographers took and shared these photos.  I was able to save copies of the photos with Emily in them... she's the only one with glasses so she's easy to pick out!

David's Tae Kwon Do Tournament, Austin

I got to take David to my first Tae Kwon Do tournament in May.  It was in Austin, so we took a little road trip together.  :-)  Since I was driving, we listened to the Audible version of The Green Ember by S.D. Smith, to pass the time.  We both enjoyed it and we made good time to Austin on Friday night. There was a really nice turnout of kids for this tournament, so I made myself comfortable and was pleased to see that it was run in a very organized fashion.  That said, we are still talking about a 4 hour event!
Blue Belt Patterns
David is currently a red stripe.  This means he has progressed through yellow, green, and blue belts and his red stripe indicated he is half-way to his red belt.  Black belt is after red, but there are many steps to get from red to black, if I understand it correctly.

The first part of the tournament is where the kids run through their belt patterns.  If the patterns of the two kids look incredibly different in the video, it is because one is a karate pattern and the other is a tae kwon do pattern.  Apparently, the blue belts still mean they are of somewhat equal rank.  The judges declare a winner at the end of the pattern.  David lost his first round but won the second, as you can see if you watch till the end.

The second part of the tournament is the sparring part.  The two opponents fight each other and gain points for making contact through punches or kicks.  In David's fight, he is red.  When he gets a point, the judge raises the red flag.  It would have made more sense for him to be white since his helmet was white;.. but whatever.  He wins his sparring match against this giant boy...  Love that!!!!

David wins against Goliath!
Here is the sparring video.

And now, I am an expert!!!  Well... at least I have an idea about this kind of rodeo now.  :-)

1st trophy (He wins 2, both 3rd place)

Mother's Day 2016

Well, this was not going to be the year for the stellar Mother's Day photo...  The kid's ate donuts after church and then they didn't really want to take a photo with me!  Look at Lia's face!!!

This is where we gave up:

But... they DID make me homemade pasta.  And each one made me a homemade card.  Oh, and did   I mention they made breakfast too?  And do you see those beautiful roses in the background.  Yes, I've got it pretty good.

Park Time

Can you tell what a beautiful day this is?  Wow!  We get to ditch school and have play dates on days like this!  Homeschooling perk?  Yes.

The kids used a good portion of their snack to feed the turtles...  See them down there?

He's still a Mama's boy.

David and Isaac are doing "boy" things here.  They are checking out the little fish and the dragonflies near the pond.  They are also throwing little pebbles at those fish and making panicking fish sounds.
