Twenty and Ten
We use the literature lists from Mother of Divine Grace because they are FANTASTIC. Twenty and Ten is the first one listed for second graders. I just happened to see in our library's used book shop for $.25 and grabbed it... only because I knew it was on the list. I didn't think any more of it till I gave it to Emily to read. Emily proceeded to tell me she had no interest in reading it. My response was that she had to listen to me read one chapter and then decide. Well this is one of those books that just sucks you in from the very beginning and Emily was literally grabbing the book out of my hands so she could read it herself. Once I got it back from her I finished it in one sitting. What a treasure! The book is about twenty French children who shelter ten Jewish children during the time of Hitler. In the beginning of the story the French children are playing as if they were the Holy Family during their flight into Egypt as they fled Herod. Because of this game they play, it is easy for the children to understand why they have to protect the Jewish children from the Nazis. From the book: "It is the same story -always- thoughout the centuries. This time Herod's soldiers are the Nazis. That's all."
